According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 3.5 million people age 65 and older live below the poverty threshold. Older women have much higher rates of poverty than older men. Older singles are more likely to live in poverty than older couples. The number of senior citizens is increasing at the fastest rate ever seen in our country’s history.
So why does America continue to rank behind other developing countries when it comes to the overall well-being of its elderly? It turns out quality senior housing, along with poverty and isolation, is part of the challenge facing today’s aging population – problems which lead to increased risk of death.
